I have a lot of new products with “Overwatch” on them. I’ve had people ask me what it means, so I figure I’ll give a little post about it.
Most importantly, it isn’t just our name, it is a state of mind. A lot like the “Sheepdog” movement and term. A sheepdog is one who protects the flock. He will gladly fight the wolves of this world to protect the sheep…no matter how dumb they are. Overwatch, on the other hand, is the idea of protecting the protectors. They stand in high or outside positions watching the horizon and allowing the “sheepdogs” to work with a little more peace, knowing someone has their six, 12, and all positions in between.
In military units, patrols have people on the flanks, in elevated positions, snipers, and air support to provide Overwatch. Law enforcement has many of these same groups of people. The American public, the average sheep, knows nothing of these people. Sheep don’t understand why we need “sheepdogs” or “Overwatch.” Luckily, protectors simply are. They don’t need a round of applause or a slap on the back. They sit among us. Likely at the end of the row with their back to the door. Standing overwatch isn’t always the greatest job. It can be lonely, time-consuming, stressful, and hopefully…boring.
To those that are sheepdogs or stand overwatch (and likely both), thank you for your service. You don’t have to be in the military, law enforcement, or fire service to serve.
