A few months ago, I was up late looking at some of the defining points in my career. I have been in the law enforcement profession for almost a decade and have thousands of memories that make me laugh, cry, smile, and send shivers down my spine.
I think we as human beings like to put things into categories, so I got to thinking… are there different kinds of criminals? I posted a shortened version of this on my Facebook page months ago, but here are some of my thoughts on people, criminals, and the job of law enforcement.
I believe there are 4 kinds of people (as far as criminals are concerned).
The INNOCENTS: Those that always follow the laws and rarely have contact with law enforcement. The vast majority of our population never have contact with a police officer outside of maybe a traffic stop. Col. Grossman refers to this population as “sheep”. I’ve heard some people offended by that term…thinking being a sheep means you can’t think for yourself. I don’t believe he intended the term in that way at all. Sheep are cute animals that stick together, do what is right, and are only aggressive if you try to hurt the group.
The SCREW UPS: People that have occasional contact with law enforcement over stupid moments in life. Many people make poor decisions, especially in their younger years or when they’ve been drinking.
The DESPERATES: Those that consistently get into trouble due to poor circumstances and life choices. Many of these “desperates” are addicted to drugs or alcohol and commit crime due to their intoxication or their need to fill their addiction. Most desperates don’t want to commit crime, but do out of what they believe is “necessity.”
The PREDATORS: The criminals that commit crime for the sole purpose of preying on others in order to gain fear, wealth, or status. The predators hunt for victims who are down, distracted, and looking for help. The predators are cunning, controlling, and without feeling.
I believe law enforcement’s job is to protect the INNOCENTS, prevent the SCREW UPS, keep the DESPERATES in check… And HUNT THE PREDATORS.
Stay safe out there my brothers and sisters in blue… and happy hunting.
